Hiro Nishikawa
Tokyo, Japan
An artist based primarily in Tokyo.
He studied electrical engineering at university with the aim of becoming a recording engineer. During his studies, he became deeply involved in creating silkscreen prints, which led him to begin his career as a graphic designer after graduation. Throughout this time, he continued to search for his own form of artistic expression.
The motifs of his work arise from his own fantasies and hypotheses. He imagines what silent plants might think about humans, forming speculative narratives around them. Giving concrete form to these ideas through photography—a medium that records reality—was a radical approach. By collecting evidence that imagination could exist as reality, he shapes these ideas into finished works. This is his creative method.
His encounter with the platinum–palladium printing process was also fateful. Images created through this technique will not disappear as long as their support—the paper itself—endures, a lifespan said to extend for a thousand years or more. Long after his body has decayed, his works may remain somewhere on Earth, quietly watching over the fate of human civilization.
