Hiro Nishikawa
Tokyo, Japan

An artist based primarily in Tokyo.
At university, I studied electrical engineering with the aim of becoming a recording engineer. During my studies, I became deeply engaged in silkscreen printmaking, which led me to begin my career as a graphic designer after graduation. Throughout this time, I continued to search for my own artistic expression.

The motifs of my work are my own imaginings and hypotheses. I speculate on what silent plants might be thinking about humans, constructing hypotheses from these imaginings. Giving concrete form to them through photography—a medium that records reality—was, for me, a radical idea. I gather evidence that my imaginings could exist as reality and complete them as works of art. This is my creative approach.

My encounter with the platinum–palladium printing process, a rare and special photographic technique, was also fateful. Images created using this process will not fade as long as their support—the paper itself—does not decay. They are said to last for a thousand years, or even longer. Long after my body has returned to dust, my works will remain somewhere on this earth, quietly watching over the fate of civilization.
